Tents-Haven't tried it in the field yet, but I'm impressed with the cost, weight and ease of use of the U.S. Army Basic Training Youth Tent. It's super easy to set up, weighs 3 and 1/2 pounds and costs 29.95 on Amazon. I picked up a stuff sack at Walmart to put it in (and packed the poles separately). It will be interesting to see how it holds up.

Stoves- Sadly, BSA is considering the various types of alcohol 'cat can' stoves as forbidden items. The next best thing is the Esbit pocket stoves. They're small, light and cheap (at about $10). They're probably a bit safer than the white gas backpacking stoves (and much easier to get lit). If you pick one up, be sure and get plenty of extra tablets.

Packs
Alps Mountaineering makes some nice starter backpacks that are fairly affordable. They are external frame and have quite a bit of room. We own a Zion pack and it seems to be fairly durable.
They run about $91.
