Pocketknife (no long-bladed knife) Be sure that its sharpened before you go.
First Aid Kit (gauze pads, bandaids, moleskin, pair of scissors, antibiotic ointment)
Extra clothes (a pair of light socks or sock liners and a pair of wool socks, a pair of underwear and a light/old T-shirt).
Water bottle (keep it simple!)
Flashlight (buy 2 of the tiny el-cheapo halogen lights at Harbor Freight- make sure that they work).
Food (Trail Mix, Cliff Bars, packs of dried fruit)
Matches (Strike anywhere are more useful than strike on the box)

Bandana (has many uses)
Roll of Toilet Paper (Ditto)

2 Trash Bags (act as pack covers, can store dirty laundry, etc)
